ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the ways in which geography education and geographers can contribute to the development of knowledgeable citizens who are both skilful and employable. A widely used definition of employability is 'the capability to gain initial employment, maintain employment and obtain employment if required'. Before looking at how geography and geographers have responded, the chapter explores the 'vocational education'. As early as 1960, Dudley Stamp, a pioneer in the field of applied geography proposed: If the past 50 years have been spent in developing geographical method of survey and analysis, surely the time has now come to apply these methods towards understanding and interpretation of some of the features of the world of today and use these methods in helping towards the solution of some of the great world problems – the increasing pressure of population on space, the development of underdeveloped areas, or the attempt to improve living conditions which is the object of town and country planning.
