ABSTRACT

In 2014 the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, made clear what reforms post 14 were designed to achieve. This chapter considers how this has impacted on the kind of geography now emerging post 14; the changes to the way fieldwork will be assessed at GCSE and A level; the overall changes to assessment in geography; and importantly, the way in which geography teachers will need to adapt to these changes. The Department for Education and Ofqual have approached both GCSEs and A levels in a more direct interventionist manner since 2010. Lambert and Reiss make a strong case for fieldwork in geography (and science) qualifications across the 14–19 age range, uncontroversially, for ever since the introduction of GCSE in 1986, fieldwork has been a key component of 'coursework assessment' or more recently 'controlled assessment'.
