ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates some of the most common employment opportunities for adults with intellectual and development disability (IDD). It explores historical context that shaped the employment landscape. Specific attention is given to outline potential benefits of and barriers to employment experienced by individuals with IDD. The chapter provides some different employment scenarios that are common for individuals with IDD. Each scenario presents information about the adult as well as their specific work situation. The case scenarios involving Bennett, Ali, Caroline, and Spencer illustrate the diverse journeys individuals are on when searching for and securing employment. Individuals with IDD have unique skills and abundant potential. Leaders and practitioners in the field of IDD continue to struggle with the complexities of employment. Finally, the chapter provides practical principles for helping professionals working with individuals with IDD and their family members as they navigate the process of obtaining and maintaining meaningful employment.
