ABSTRACT
This chapter explores working with the LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual and ally) population regarding adoption through the lens of the social work profession. It discusses the types of adoption, past and current legal and political trends that impact LGBTQIA adoption, challenges and obstacles in LGBTQIA adoption, and LGBTQIA youth in the United States foster care system. Social workers should be knowledgeable of the various types of adoption and issues frequently encountered when working with clients who are exploring adoption. These types are: domestic adoption, intercountry adoption, open adoption and closed adoption. The purpose of the home study process is to educate and prepare the prospective family for adoption, and for the social worker to gather information from the family that will help the social worker match the family with a child or youth whose needs they can best meet.
