ABSTRACT

Postman (1996) suggests that schools have helped to elevate what he refers to as the false gods of economic utility, consumerism, technology, ethnic separatism and resentment. His critique of the education system highlights the lack of a unifying narrative-a narrative that is transcendent and inspiring. Without such a narrative, Postman warns of the potential for a world premised on supposed surety, a world in which one in which meaning and language are not questioned and the system loses sight of the value of interrogating its premises.
