ABSTRACT

The phenomenon of dual belonging (DB) has been studied from within different disciplinary approaches: anthropological, sociological, phenomenological, feminist, philosophical and theological. There is a growing literature on this complex phenomenon which is sometimes referred to as dual belonging, multiple belonging, hyphenated belonging and so on. The Roman Catholic Church puts its followers under an obligation to be answerable to Christ. This accountability is finally a matter of conscience, but only a conscience properly formed. First, DB is not possible if magisterial teachings are contradicted related to the necessity of Christ/Church for salvation, the necessity of mission and the importance of inculturation. Second it is possible to be a DB Z type Catholic-Dge lugs Buddhist in good faith, if and only if such a person would inevitably see their DB as a missionary presence to Buddhism and that they hold that Buddhism reaches its telos through conversion to Christ.
