ABSTRACT

Anything I say nowadays – doesn’t matter what it is, “Nice day”, anyway, a look of apprehension comes into the face of the listener. They seize the back of a chair for support. I have to calm them down first, and say, “Now, it’s all right, I am only going to say it’s a nice day!” Perhaps in view of my more pithy statements that would be a bit of a shock. Up at the Port [Glasgow] sometimes when I had to let fly to a considerable extent on my more peculiar views – you know the sort of thing “I’m married to everybody ready in varying degrees” etc. etc. Joe, the boxing champion looks up from poking the fire, and in a quiet voice says, “Yee’l go oot on your nut”. 1
