ABSTRACT

Leadership is a topic which has been discussed for almost as long as people have written literature, and indeed Burke reported that by 2006, he could find over 15,000 articles and books on leadership. Groups usually need leadership, and leadership will normally emerge if no one is appointed as Chair, and sometimes there may be a power struggle if a poor leader has been appointed, or more than one person wants to lead. Leader implies the person who chooses the route, although that does not necessarily mean that they choose the destination or the target. Follower seems to imply that not only does one not want to lead, but also does not choose the destination, the target or route. An element of what motivates staff is the form that the organisational culture takes. Situational and contingency theories propose that the nature of the organisation, and the environment, determine which style of leadership is required for the organisation to be successful.
