ABSTRACT

The three primary sources – or roots – of motivation within the human psyche: personality; self-concept; and expectations. The models of personality are various, and in the West seem to hinge on four basic types, which generate within them 16 subtypes. Many organisations invest heavily in understanding the 16 subtypes of personality, but very few people seem to understand or rather ‘get’ the full range. Four types of personality: are you a planner; are you a leader; are you an influencer; and are you a connector. In the Enneagram there are nine basic types of personality, each with their own qualities, motivations, virtues/strengths, and vices/weaknesses. Carl Rogers suggested that the self-concept has three different yet distinct components: the self-image, the self-esteem, and the ideal self. Motivational Maps is derived from looking at core concepts within three models – the Enneagram, Edgar Schein’s Career Anchors, and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – and seeing the overlay of ideas.
