ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of challenges faced by orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Botswana. It analyses responses to OVC care and welfare. The chapter highlights recommendations with greater potential to improve/enhance the welfare of children classified as vulnerable. It covers the issues which are guided by data gleaned from desk research. The chapter reviews the documents that focus on OVC in Botswana was done. Botswana, like many African countries, has experienced an increase in the numbers of OVC. Botswana is one of the countries that have been hard hit by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Several pieces of legislation that aim to address the unique and multifaceted challenges faced by OVC prevail in Botswana. The Short-Term Plan of Action is the major policy that addresses the needs of OVC in Botswana. Residential care facilities for children in need of care in Botswana are a relatively recent phenomenon.
