ABSTRACT

Given their scattered origins, Muslims in Italy tend to fall into several different associations and organizations. This prevents the state from classifying them together into a unified representative Muslim body. It will be difficult for the Italian state to reach an agreement with the Muslim community in large part because none of the groups represents a significant portion of Muslims in Italy. After failing to forge Italian Islam into a single organization to satisfy the requirements of Art. 8 of the Constitution, the Italian government has established a number of consultative bodies in order to obtain Islamic feedback on topics relevant to Islam in Italy. Some preconditions for the Jewish community–Italian state agreement were paradoxically prepared during the fascist regime. The dynamics of the Pentecostal spiritualism in Italy is similar to that of Muslims in Italy. Spain encountered several difficulties when attempting to sign an agreement with Spanish Muslims.
