ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to review how technology has shaped aviation training, explores some examples of rapidly evolving technologies and discusses their potential application to future aviation training. Aviation training has long used an instructional approach that blends strategies: a combination of classroom-based theoretical instruction and real-world practical training. When considering technology in aviation training, it is tempting to jump immediately to present-day digital marvels. Some interesting applications of big data are in use within the aviation industry. Wearable technology refers to portable devices that attach to the human body, collecting data and delivering information. Wearable technology is capable of transmitting a range of private data, such as location, personal information and communications, and health data. Beyond the use of big data to identify training needs within a company, and wearable technology to provide learner data to instructors, data can also drive the structure of a training curriculum.
