ABSTRACT

The key components of the Training Overlay Model and the relationships between them can be elicited by considering two examples of team training, one on a small scale and the other on a large scale. The training strategy that is often adopted for pilot type-conversion training is commonly referred to as 'zero flight time training' as the flying component is all taught in a flight simulator. The choice of simulator-based training is predicated on a number of factors. The cost of simulator training is substantially lower than live flying. A typical simulator training exercise on a course of this type starts with a briefing by the instructor about the simulator exercise content, and the key learning points and assessment criteria. In a typical full-flight simulator used for this type of training the flight deck is replicated in full and the trainees occupy the pilots' seats as they would in the real aircraft.
