Help to be Resilient
Police officers are problem-solvers by nature or at least by experience. So, it seems unnecessary to ask a third party to help them with a problem. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing is a treatment for trauma that has been increasingly demonstrated to be helpful for first responders and members of the military. Cognitive behavioral therapy addresses the behavioral problems that tend to occur with depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder such as withdrawal from people, places, and situations, or problematic interpersonal behaviors such as passive or aggressive communication styles. Therapy with the police member, spouse, and children with a mental health professional might help the system to deal with the demands of police work. Family members of police employees are routinely out of sight, out of mind when it comes to organizational support efforts. Yet, weakened family systems mean weakened police employee resilience.
