ABSTRACT
Unpacking the Romantic topos of the lone genius, the practices of Rembrandt van Rijn are analysed as indicative of the characteristics of the masterskaya archetype. Drawing on the work of Svetlana Alpers, Rembrandt’s painting techniques, leadership qualities and manipulation of the marketplace evidence his visionary authority.
