ABSTRACT
The School of Dramatic Art is generally conceived as the theatre that revitalised laboratory practice in Russia. A rebellious rezhisser, Anatoli Vassiliev embodies the contradictory positions of the masterskaya archetype. Desiring to create alternative theatre that reawakens the Russian philosophical soul, Vassiliev repeatedly chants his own theatrical pedigree to ensure his place within the Russian theatre canon.
