ABSTRACT

This chapter provides occupational health and safety management systems and outlines the essential components of such systems for organisations. It explains advocated benefits and a problem associated with occupational health and safety management systems, and introduces differing standards and guidance documents. Performance criteria need to be measurable, either in quantity or by quality, to check that stipulated goals are being met. The chapter also provides examples of useful documentation for contributing to the systematic management and audit of health and safety on construction projects. The health and safety executive prescribe a worthwhile checklist tool for the auditing of several components of an organisation's health and safety management system. An occupational health and safety management systems can also assist in the delivery of a number of the organisation's legal and moral obligations and can also facilitate an internal focus on good management practice and continuous improvement.
