ABSTRACT

Community relations is a vital component of development and one which should flow naturally from a well-run planning consultation. A successful pre-planning consultation will have created a good foundation for the next stage of engagement. But rather than a continuation of the work to date, community engagement post-planning has new aims and objectives, new stakeholders and new challenges. A construction management plan (CMP) is a set of conditions put in place by a local authority to ensure that developers minimise the negative impact of construction on the surrounding community. Like the pre-planning community engagement which preceded it, good community relations is symmetrical, responsive, engaging, genuine, timely, informative and socially aware. Community buildings are an important feature of a successful community and therefore a significant benefit in community relations. Local and national bodies exist to evaluate construction companies' aptitude in managing community relations and promote best practice throughout the industry.
