ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses various concepts and approaches to an art of living and a good life. It argues that the personal development of human beings and their ability to live a good and beautiful life as described in Schmid's art of living concept should be the key focus of educational theory and practice. The chapter explores and discusses a range of philosophical, psychological and educational theories to develop a foundation on which an educational theory based on the art of living can be built. Philosophical considerations about the art of living, a review of (positive) psychology research has clarified various terms and concepts in the field of emotions, including the notions of happiness, pleasures, enjoyments, flow and subjective well-being. Apart from enjoyments created by flow experiences, harmony and meaning in life have been discussed as relevant for living a good life.
