ABSTRACT

This chapter orients people to the court-mandated group process for domestic violence and answers some questions in a way that allows them to be more open to the group experience. It helps people to learn about the reality of group and prepare to be an active participant in the change process. The chapter answers some universal questions about domestic violence groups. It focuses on a primary tool of the group: the art of self-discipline, and explains how to set realistic goals for themselves and the group process. The chapter presents a story of Brian, a graduate of the program. He lets people know what it was like for him to start the program and what helped him the most on his road to change. The chapter provides myths and realities of group. Groups for domestic violence vary greatly in terms of duration.
