ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how psychology has played a game-changing role for the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) in its transformation from a largely custodial prison service to a progressive correctional service employing the use of cutting-edge psychological practice methods. It describes the key elements of psychological work within the SPS. The adoption of a psychological model of rehabilitation led to the incorporation of psychological principles into the organisational structure of the SPS. Initial efforts to apply psychology in the SPS included the development and implementation of an assessment and intervention framework informed by theory and research evidence. Since 2001, higher risk offenders have been provided with risk reduction intervention programmes. Higher-risk adult offenders were provided with criminogenic programmes conducted by correctional rehabilitation specialists.
