ABSTRACT

In conversion the Soul is actively concerned to resolve the conflict; in a psycho-neurosis the personality is acting on the biological and childish psychological level it is meeting a danger and not a challenge. Most writers on conversion have dealt at length with the abnormal phenomena which often accompany the experience of the dramatic struggle, and resultant experience of conversion. James thought that the phenomena were only found in persons of a psychopathic temperament. Suggestion or Christian Science or Faith-healing may help to divert our attention from the symptoms of an active physical disease, but the pathological process is not altered; the disease still ravages the organism. All that the best helper can do is to present the fact in this way and then in that until spontaneously the mind intuits the means of its own salvation and peace, and the difficulties which prevent the consummation.
