ABSTRACT

The dissolute existence of the friars and the neglect of their liturgical duties provoked lay resentment, which was expressed by anger, contempt, and anxiety. But what did the townsfolk expect from the friars, and from the clergy in general, that was left unaccomplished? The testimonies suggest that they called the Augustinians to account for not regularly celebrating the divine services in their church. As posited by one of the noblemen from the village of Rádóc, “there were not as many services as there should have been in such an outstanding friary, due to which the people living here became so indignant, that many complained of how these magnificent buildings were lacking in friars and services”. 1
