ABSTRACT

An unnamed Moldovan poet was said to have written many years ago: "When Moldovans get together and feast, they cry at one side of the table and laugh at the other. Their soul seems to resemble a globe with two hemispheres—one is day, the other night. Joy and sorrow." If true, it helps to explain dualities inherent in Moldovan culture: a divided nation historically, linguistically, economically and politically. No wonder Moldovans have survived so long, yet it is a wonder that a thriving advertising industry estimated at $14 million USD in 2005 took hold, given complex, dynamic roadblocks to progress (Dodonu, 2000).
