ABSTRACT

Some business analysts are predicting that businesses are ripe for disruption at a faster and deeper rate due to a number of forces. Some analysts believe that air travel may be more vulnerable to disruptive innovation, given the widespread lack of customer satisfaction expressed by airline travelers, the large revenue base of the sector, and the role of emerging technologies to impact both the supply side as well as the demand side. This chapter also discusses that disruption takes place in the air travel space; the uncertain thing is its timing, extent, and areas. It provides numerous examples of the technology-related changes implemented during the past six decades. The chapter also presents some examples of potential disrupters that could emerge from within the airline industry and some from related businesses and from outside of the industry, especially companies rich with information and analytics to profit from the management of the relationship between airlines, other providers of travel-related services, and travelers themselves.
