ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the learning part of service-learning. First, it developed a learning framework which classifies learning into three types basic, advanced and development learning. Development learning is also relevant because values are an important concern of ours. In discussing the factors that support learning we considered motivation, responsibility and personal centring. The chapter discusses the social process of learning and the fact that the institutional system can provide a relatively safe space for student learning. Bloom's taxonomy also provides a useful framework to help us consider the learning outcomes in any educational programme. It was originally published in 1956 and identifies three overlapping areas of learning: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. These three learning domains represent the acquisition of knowledge, values, and skills. Finally, the chapter examines how service-learning provides a curriculum-based opportunity to learn personal, interpersonal, social, and academic learning, along with work related learning.
