ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 analysed the factors that shaped my burning issues, starting with the general research GENE and then applying it to my own personal GENE which drew out my GENEius, as it were, and hence this research as a whole. This chapter paints a picture of Nigeria’s overall economic development within a socio-political setting since there is a combination of several interrelated variables that affect the country’s economic prospects. Good governance indicators, two major development indicators and the BECANS (Business Environment and Competitiveness Across Nigerian States) benchmark in Nigeria trace the incidence of poverty and unemployment in the country, which is the reason why extraneous economic models applied in Nigeria never work. The application of the capitalist and communist schools may still face some implementation challenges if realistic factors concerning socio-political and economic facts are not extensively appraised. Whether borrowing from the West or the North or adopting state-led development through an Eastern approach, or through embracing the integral moral economic replica from the religious books, which come from the Middle East, or finally, perhaps through the new economic thoughts from Africans living in Africa or those that understand indigenous Africanism, the application must be appraised. This chapter analyses some relevant factors that affect the overall economic development through the perception of both the neo-liberal school and through the use of qualitative evidence which includes the researcher’s experience in order to give a clear portrait of Nigeria’s socio-political and economic situation while building a foundation from which the body of knowledge can be further developed.
