ABSTRACT

In the quest for tolerance of sexual orientation in Ask No Questions, in employment and trade specifically, this chapter examines efforts against sexual orientation discrimination in the area of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which at the time was the largest economic and legal undertaking ever attempted, having an important impact on the labor force generally and on particular classes of workers specifically. It looks at NAFTA from its inception, examining first its benefits and then its drawbacks. It also looks at the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC) and the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), as well as legislation of the Americas, namely the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man, the American Convention on Human Rights, the Statute of the Inter-American Court on Human Rights and the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
