ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief overview on the use of the assessment centre (AC) method in the public service of the Republic of Singapore. It discusses some of the challenges that AC professionals may face in the Singapore context and close by highlighting some of the lessons the author's have learned along the way during their more than ten years of work in this area. Singapore invests heavily in the selection and development of scholars', young high potentials who will attend the world's best universities at public expense and who will return to eventually take up key leadership positions in the public service. The Beacon Programme is the Singapore Public Service's first development centre (DC), designed using AC methodology. While the language of business and government in Singapore is English, many Singaporeans live in households where the primary means of discourse is a language other than English.
