ABSTRACT

This chapter further examines some of the arguments that have been put forward in support of secrecy about donor conception and anonymous sperm, egg and embryo donation. It will be shown that none of the arguments justify the continuance of such practices. The chapter begins by considering the few arguments put forward in support of maintaining secrecy and anonymity that focus on the donor-conceived person directly before moving to consideration of the reasoning that predominantly focuses on the adults involved, or the possible effect removing anonymity may have on the fertility industry. It will highlight the flawed reasoning in many arguments put forth to convince others that anonymity should prevail. It will also show that such arguments do little more than perpetuate unhealthy stigma and shame. It is also noted again that while perceived threats to supply and demand often drive the desire to maintain an option for anonymity, open donation may not in fact ‘kill’ the industry. In light of this scenario, there needs to be consideration of how to support people when faced with infertility, while moving to end the secrecy, shame and anonymity that surrounds donor conception. Furthermore, the interests and needs of donor-conceived people, and not profit, need to prevail.
