ABSTRACT

The Midnight Notes Collective's (MNC) work takes the notions of primitive accumulation and the enclosure of the commons, and expands them to understand the contemporary struggle of capital and labour. The MNC provides a theory of capitalism enclosure and a broad paradigm of proletarian resistance and emancipation the commons. This concept presents both promises and problems. If we keep the idea of the commons to be the forms of non-capitalist subsistence based on autonomous and egalitarian relations between commoners then we have a powerful concept. The commons can refer to a range of activities and structures that both predate capitalism and are created by the proletariat in struggle. This shows the power that millions of people have to directly create alternatives to work and the market and how these alternatives can transform our condition into communism. The MNC have equipped us with a powerful rhetorical, analytical and political tool, but its uses are limited.
