ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case studies illustrate in detail how poor households responded to their conditions of impoverishment and whether they have been able to realise their plans for the next six months. The chapter depicts the responses of a Sunni family, the Ayhans, which entered the month of April as the most successful household in the sample, and had fared well over the six month period. The case study starts with an overview of the household's socio-demographic background, followed by an examination of its responses to poverty in relation to four key types of behaviour. The chapter explores the labour market behaviour of the female and male spouses and their children respectively between April and October. It depicts components of the Ayhans' asset portfolio, and explains how this portfolio was created. It also focuses on the household's consumption behaviour. The Ayhans made skilful use of their resources, and collectively shared the responsibility of coping with impoverishment.
