ABSTRACT

The previous chapter provided an overview of traditional and current business models in Australian-based book publishing. Owing both to their Australian provenance and to their limited number, these models are best regarded as being indicative rather than comprehensive, both in coverage and in application. That said, the majority of the companies involved were Australian offshoots of global publishing empires, and all of them were engaged in tackling the challenges posed by changes in markets and technologies. Furthermore, all publishers today, whatever their location, categorization and target markets, face the common challenge of designing business models against a background of digitization, unrelenting competition and the growing power of customers.
