ABSTRACT

This chapter provides step-by-step guidance on designing and conducting a summative usability assessment to evaluate an incident reporting system. This type of assessment should be undertaken to test, and refine, the design of an incident reporting system prior to implementation. The application of the process is illustrated by describing an evaluation of the understanding and preventing led outdoor accidents data system (UPLOADS) prototype. The chapter describes how to undertake a summative usability assessment to evaluate an incident reporting system. Summative usability assessments are usually undertaken late in the development cycle, and typically involve an evaluation of all major tasks and functionalities with a given system. One of the assessments undertaken to evaluate the prototype UPLOADS is presented as an example of conducting, reporting, and interpreting the findings from such an evaluation. The chapter concludes with strategies used to address the problems identified with the UPLOADS prototype, and the implications for the design of any incident reporting system.
