ABSTRACT
Universities are often seen as very important knowledge producers and nodes for
knowledge transfer (Rutten et al., 2003). Traditional university research is still a
major producer of new knowledge. At the same time, universities collect and provide
access to literally ‘worlds’ of knowledge produced elsewhere. This knowledge is
transferred to other realms of society and the economy through their educational
programmes and through consultancy and cooperation with external partners.
