A Patriot Foreign Policy?, 1742–1744

Crises throw up consideration of the essential nature of political systems. An arresting discussion between Carteret and François de Bussy, the French envoy, in January 1743 about the British political system reflected the extent to which, in the eighteenth century, and with far less fear than today about the disclosure of correspondence and other material, rulers, ministers and diplomats could comment in conversation on their respective political systems.
