ABSTRACT

Beauty provides some kind of zero degree of relating to another, a relating that is not prefabricated or conceptual. Beauty, in other words, is no conceptual, universalizable, and virtual. And as such it could provide a kind of template for something like democratic politics though it does not tell one what the content of that politics should be. The brilliance of Byronic rhyme: the killer couplet that is in one sense totally unexpected because totally inevitable and expectable in another sense. It is not obscure at all, and smooth, like beauty, yet weird also like beauty. Beauty is a little warning light or twinkling star of the imminence of death. Cheating death by being death: that is how to state the paradox in one of its most obvious forms. And this is how Byron is nonhuman, and plays with the nonhuman my titles apostrophe is ambiguous.
