ABSTRACT
This chapter shows how the author's experiences and reading habits around the time of the conference helped to frame our understanding of the emerging Challenging History' community of practice and the structural challenges faced by museums and other institutions as they seek to engage with this issue. As part of these explorations, in 2009, Victoria found herself working with Sam Cairns, Alex Drago and Amy Ryall and was asked to develop a structure for workshops and discussions for the seminar series held at the Tower of London which seeded the Challenging History' manifesto and community of practice. It draws together a few examples that people believe begin to indicate alternative approaches to this same issue. Finally, it sketch out three thematic areas that we believe may help to frame the emerging practice of challenging history, specifically a renewed consideration of time, emptiness and the process of inscription.
