ABSTRACT

Amongst the burgeoning academic interest in the experiences of children in urban and rural nature, very little research exists exploring learning disabled young people’s independent mobility and play. By focusing on the experiences of disabled young people, this chapter allows insight into the lived experiences of a particularly marginalized group of children. Through reflections on research with a group of learning disabled young people in Manchester, UK, this chapter will engage with ideas about the ways in which society values both urban nature and learning disabled childhood. Although situated in a British context, this discussion has clear relevance, and implications for, approaches to facilitating social and environmental relationships amongst learning disabled children and young people at an international scale.
