ABSTRACT

In this chapter we present the results of a study on the medical travel experiences of children seeking oncology treatment in Argentina. It highlights the value of examining medical travel through the eyes of children and their parents and understand the role played by the disease, medical treatment and relocation to a new city in their own terms. This focus on the micro-level aspects of child medical travel allows for considering the complex and multidimensional nature of the process of seeking medical treatment in a different locale. The chapter sheds some light on the complex medical and emotional negotiations families make when seeking medical treatment. It discusses families' experiences of obtaining a diagnosis, receiving medical therapies, travelling within Buenos Aires to secure care and other required services, and accessing follow-up care. Follow-up care brought new mobility possibilities for families because they could go back to their place of origin temporarily and travel to Buenos Aires regularly for check-ups.
