ABSTRACT

This chapter assembles ideas from Indigenous groups in response to these questions. Although the literature on Indigenous children's wellbeing – in place – is quite limited, key commonalities in relevant material are presented, primarily sourced from Canada, New Zealand, the US, Australia, Scandinavia and Africa. The chapter begins with a brief introduction to Indigenous health. It then sets out some ways of understanding the wellbeing of Indigenous children. The chapter presents the primary challenges: first the threats and barriers to Indigenous children's wellbeing, and then some fundamental principles for transforming the current situation. It also presents some general principles held in common across many Indigenous groups, and recognises that in practice, diverse geographic, cultural, historical and societal contexts – within and between Indigenous groups – mean that in any particular setting, a regional specificity of approach is crucial to achieving the wellbeing of Indigenous children.
