ABSTRACT

Building upon typomorphological analysis of the seven elements of Nanjing, this chapter demonstrates how the analysis can inform design practice in the city through design guidance. The study on the street system, streets, urban blocks and plots also reveals valuable typological processes, which yield useful design guidelines. Also, the general plan type implying urban axes, boundaries and fabric well informs design guidance. This chapter concentrates on design strategies for new forms and new development in the future. The design guidance based on typomorphological analysis is contextually responsive and specific to Nanjing, but it is by no means an exclusive list. Other aspects reflecting the complex and multi-faceted nature of urban design must continue to be considered, such as functional issues, transportation, energy, resources management and environmental sustainability. The design guidance that emerges from typomorphological analysis will serve to augment this broader urban design framework with a focus on issues relating specifically to cultural identity.
