ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book analyses the contribution that social work can make to end-of-life care for older people, and discusses what they can draw from the experience of specialist end-of-life and palliative care services. It introduces the idea of the ‘ageing journey’, to help provide a structure for our thinking about our role and contribution in every stage of ageing. The book describes the contribution of social work and end-of-life care services. It provides the importance of multiprofessional and multiagency service provision. The book focuses on principles of citizenship social work with older people approaching the end of life. It draws out practice strategies for incorporating end-of-life care into social work with older people in ways that promote citizening. The book looks at social care and social work practice in end-of-life care services and in bereavement care.
