ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the stage in which people are more aware of ageing, and increasingly accept that social care services may be required in the future. The chapter aims to establish elements of a citizenship practice strategy for the fourth age. The chapter identifies specialized skills relevant to citizenship practice with older people. It examines the assessment and person-centred care planning roles of social work in person-centred care. Older people may begin to consider changes in their home or their housing arrangements, as they become aware of loss in capacity to carry out the activities of daily living. Citizening strategy might encourage people to consider and plan helpful alterations or changes in good time. Maintaining citizenship means older people maintaining social contacts and interests, adapting activities within the limitations of changes in their capacity. Aim to encourage them to keep things going, rather than give things up.
