ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the foundation stones for consistently delivering wise and effective organisational leadership and optimal long-term performance. Effective organisational leadership and optimal performance requires that the principles and perspectives upon which senior executives take policy decisions pervade the whole organisation. An acknowledgement and understanding of the existence and nature of universal, globally applicable values has implications of critical importance for the operational business leader. Practical wisdom requires a clear framework of values and principles as the basis of effective evaluation and consistent decision making. Organisations which are successful in the long term require a dominant logic which is dynamic rather than sclerotic. Such frameworks of logic must include patterns and paradigms which encompass a sense of excitement, dynamism, anticipation, insight, adaptability and flexibility. Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) now provides financial services to over 105 million individuals and self-employed customers, with employees in excess of 300,000, in 62 countries.
