ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses laws and policies, which may have implications for access to sexual and reproductive health services for children and adolescents in Nigeria. It is necessary to engage in a brief discussion of the impacts of socio-cultural and health system related factors on access to contraception for adolescents in the country. The chapter describes that the enactment of the Child's Rights Act (CRA) into law is a positive development in advancement of children's and adolescent's rights in the country. However, the provisions of the CRA with regard to realizing the right to sexual autonomy for children and adolescents leave much to be desired. The chapter provides that a citizen of Nigeria of a particular community, ethnic group, place of origin, sex, religion or political opinion shall not by reason only that he is such a person be subjected to discrimination. Nigeria does not lack the laws or policies to realize access to sexual and reproductive health services for adolescents.
