ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a particular attention to the clarity of privacy policies in social networking sites and games as well as the process of data mining and recursive shaping of the games based on data-mined user behaviors. It examines the actors in game development and marketing and illuminates how the developers of social media games, the players, and the game spaces themselves. The chapter argues social gaming spaces are fruitful sites for analyzing how the games have been designed and are maintained to stimulate a particular kind of communication. The games themselves have been designed to mimic the communication patterns of social networking site users and encourage higher numbers of users to participate in them. Social networking games are programmed to elicit a high level of sharing practices: They encourage users to post game play statistics on their Facebook Timelines. It demonstrates people also document a lack of awareness about privacy and the implications of data mining in the United States.
