ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the idea of the normative influence of constitutional structures, exploring the influence of constitutional paradigms, particularly through the influence of the state. It emphasis the notion of the state, how it developed, and the influence it may have had upon the evolution of civilization. The chapter describes the historical review so it will pause from time to time to consider the contemporary effect of constitutional thought upon political, social and economic stability, and the strength of the state. It is especially significant where, in the case of the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Israel, the constitution is 'indeterminate, indistinct and unentrenched'. The Industrial Revolution gave economic power to those counties in which it began the United Kingdom, but it also gave them technological advantages, especially in respect of communications, mass production, and military and naval force power projection which meant that they enjoyed significant political advantages.
