ABSTRACT

The aim of the internal strategic appraisal is to make a high-level inventory of corporate assets to provide a resource-based view to complement the external view. Strategic ideas can arise from the opportunities identified in the external analysis or build on the capabilities identified in the internal analysis. When it comes to crafting strategy, the best use should be made of both the external opportunities identified and the internal resources available within the corporation, supplemented by additional capabilities that may be required. The strategist should look across the corporation with an open mind picking out anything of strategic significance. The heritage of the corporation has been built up over the life of the corporation, collecting assets, developing resources and collecting liabilities. An inventory of the main strategic assets is a set of building blocks to feed into the strategic process. These may not be sufficient but making use of assets that are already owned makes sense.
