ABSTRACT

This chapter is composed of the following sections: culture and communication; business continuity management planning revisited and communication risk management strategy. The availability of communication services is a key consideration because during an emergency situation, local telephone networks can be swamped with activity and this may have knock-on effects. In order to be effective, risk management needs to become part of the organization's culture, hence creating awareness about risk is very important. The appointment of a risk manager with clearly defined responsibility and accountability will help the organization to develop a strategic corporate intelligence capability and this will raise the profile of the corporate security function. Bearing the above in mind, it is possible to construct a communication risk management strategy that can be considered generic in nature and which can be reconfigured depending upon the actual company and the industry or the segment of the industry that it competes in.
